Fon establishes major US beachhead, lands time Warner Cable.(Time Warner Cable Inc.)

Imagine the US with 55 million free, or near free, Wi-Fi hotspots. That's what Wi-Fi sharing network Fon has in mind and it took a major step this week toward that goal.

Breaking with the other major US broadband services, or perhaps blazing a trail for them, Time Warner Cable (TWC) this week signed a deal with Fon that will allow TWC's residential subscribers to make their broadband access available wirelessly to anyone in or traveling through the neighborhood.

Time Warner Cable has 6.6 million of the 55 million or so US broadband subscribers, meaning there could be 6.6 million new Wi-Fi hotspots, or "Fonspots" as Fon calls them, available for free to many...
