AT&T's decision to make its 10,000 or so Wi-Fi hotspots available for free to subscribers to its wired (as opposed to mobile) broadband customers is part of a trend that could have a major impact on such varied things as eliminating CD/DVD drives from laptops and other portable devices to a business model where consumers pay for content but get the device free.

The thought of everyone walking around with a device in their pocket or purse that always has a high-speed Internet connection is staggering.
