NHTSA launches holiday crackdown

Transport Topics, December, 2002 by Anonymous

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said it has launched the longest-ever crackdown against drunken and drugged driving.

Between Dec. 20 and Jan. 5, thousands of law enforcement officers will be conducting sobriety checkpoints and saturation patrols in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, the Department of Transportation said.

American Trucking Associations said in a statement it fully supported NHTSAs plan because a zero tolerance standard is already in place for the trucking industry.

Also joining the crackdown effort are the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy, Mothers Against Drunk Driving, AAA and state and local law enforcement agencies. NHTSA also said a new report found fatalities in alcohol-related crashes are increasing.
