UPS to furlough 100 pilots

United Parcel Service Inc. said Feb. 7 that it will furlough as many as 100 pilots in an effort to overcome slumping shipment volumes, in its first-ever layoffs of pilots.
UPS Airlines spokesman Mark Giuffre told TRANSPORT TOPICS that 19 pilots received furlough notices Feb. 7 that become effective March 8. The company is searching for alternative methods to cut remaining excess staff, he said.
Giuffre also said UPS has been working for months with the Independent Pilots Association that represents 2,515 UPS pilots to outline measures to trim excess staff capacity caused in part by a switch to newer-model aircraft.
