GAO Report Questions FMCSA Program

The General Accounting Office has argued that a government program intended to educate the public about how to drive around large trucks has not demonstrated it has produced any benefits.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has not shown any link between the educational benefits of its "Share the Road Safely Program," established in 1994, or its relationship to the number of car-truck accidents that have occurred on the road, said the congressional investigative agency.

American Trucking Associations has a similarly named "Share the Road" program that is supported this year by Mack Trucks Inc. The GAO report was not aimed at the ATA effort.
