Firm Puts $87 Mil. in Escrow for Exceeding EPA Limits

WASHINGTON - Caterpillar Inc., the nations leading mater of diesel engines for heavy-duty trucks, has put up $87 million to offset Environmental Protection Agency penalties it expects for selling "bridge" engines that do not comply with new emission rules, EPA officials said last week.

They said the money was to cover penalties for sales of engines failing to meet federal exhaust emissions levels that took effect last October.

Out of that amount put in escrow, EPA said Caterpillar had paid fines of about $42 million for sales of non-complying engines through March of'this year.
