CNF to pay $6.5 million fine related to hazmat allegations

CNF Inc. has agreed to pay $6.5 million in fines and plead guilty to charges that its now-closed aircargo unit violated federal laws on transporting hazardous materials.

Under an agreement with the Justice Department, CNF pleaded guilty to 12 counts of violating the law and was fined a total of $6 million. The Palo Alto, Calif, corporation said in a government filing that it would also pay $500,000 to resolve a related Federal Aviation Administration action.

The prosecution is under a new U.S. initiative targeting illegal transportation of hazardous materials. More than 1.5 billion tons of hazardous materials are shipped annually, and if proper precautions are not taken, they could be used for terrorist activity, said Attorney General John Ashcroft.
