UPS, Pilots Seek Mediator for Contract Talks

Package delivery giant UPS Inc. and the union for its 2,500 pilots said they would seek a federal mediator, after almost two years of talks failed to produce a contract agreement.
The two sides decided to ask for help from the National Mediation Board after they could not agree on pay, pensions, benefits, work scheduling and the scope of the agreement, the Independent Pilots Association and the Atlanta-based company said in a statement.
The talks began in October 2002.
"The reality is, it has been 22 months and we still have no agreements on the big five issues," union spokesman Brian Gaudet said. "It's time to move to mediation."
Mark Guiffre, a UPS spokesman, told TRANSPORT TOPICS that UPS and the union had agreed early on not to seek a mediator until July...
