Great Dane Trailers Retools; Temporarily Lays Off Workers

Company Says Effort to Cut Costs, Improve Design

More than 500 workers at a Great Dane Trailers plant in Brazil, Ind., would be put on temporary layoffs next month when part of the 29-year-old facility undergoes a $5 million retooling project, a company official said.

Most of the work to renovate the plant's refrigerated and dry freight trailer production lines would begin Jan. 10, the company said in a Jan. 4 statement.

John Flathman, the company's vice president of manufacturing operations in Indiana, said that modernizing the facility, plus projected demand from customers, "will eventually create more jobs."
