Bush Nominates Michael Jackson as DHS Deputy

President Bush nominated Michael Jackson, a Department of Transportation official in his first administration with longtime involvement in trucking, to be deputy secretary of the Homeland security Department.
Jackson, who must be confirmed by the Senate, would bring several years of transportation experience to the position, industry officials said. In addition to serving at DOT, he was a senior vice president at American Trucking Associations from 1993-1997.
Bush made the appointment on Jan. 24, the same day Asa Hutchinson resigned as DHS undersecretary for border and transportation security. A former congressman from Arkansas, Hutchinson was twice passed over for the agency's top slot after Tom Ridge announced his intention to resign.
