In the highly competitive world of the truckload carrier, elements that might seem irrelevant to industiy outsiders take on immense importance.
For carriers that haul dense freight and usually hit the standard 80,000-pound weight limit before filling up the volume of a trailer, one concern is reducing the weight of an empty rig. Eveiy pound that is not taken up by the truck has the chance to become paying freight.
"Weight is a big issue," said Jeff Sass, on-highway segment manager for Kenworth Truck Co.
