Carrier Deals With Driver Shortage Through Recruitment, Training

LEHIGHTON, Pa. - New England Motor Freight, a trucking company with 30 terminals throughout the East Coast, found a unique answer to its shortage of tractor-trailer drivers: It opened truck-driving schools and is training the drivers itself.

David Hillman, terminal manager in Lehighton, agreed that it sometimes has been tough to find drivers. He admitted, though, that he was still skeptical about the firm opening its own school.

Two classes have now graduated from the schools, which are located at four sites in the northeastern United States.

"It's working exceptionally well; better than I thought it would," Hillman said.
