Congress May Extend Highway Funding Law Again, Observers Say

With less than a month before the current extension of the highway bill expires, industry observers have raised doubts about whether Congress can finish its work on a new multiyear reauthorization in time.

The previous multiyear transportation funding law expired in 2003 and has been extended six times, with the most recent stopgap set to run out May 31.

"Hope springs eternal that they could negotiate [a bill] before May 31," John Horsley, executive director of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, told TRANSPORT TOPICS. "But it is looking increasingly likely that some extension will be required."
