Senator Urges Federal Security Plan For Hazmat Railroad Transportation

Sen. Joseph Biden (D-DeI.) introduced legislation June 16 that would require the Department of Homeland security to develop a nationwide security plan for rail transport of highly dangerous hazardous materials.
The draft legislation, known as the "Hazardous Materials Vulnerability Reduction Act of 2005," would force hazmat transporters to reroute shipments around high-threat corridors throughout the nation, as identified by DHS.
Rerouting rail cars carrying toxic chemicals would be the best way to eliminate the threat of a terrorist attack involving hazmats, Biden said. Rerouting would involve less than 5% of all hazmats shipped, he added.
