Narrowing the Gap
Transport Topics, September, 2005 by Anonymous
The gaping space between tractor and trailer continues to be one of the major causes of aerodynamic drag, according to Rose McCallen, leader of the Heavy Vehicle Aerodynamics Project at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California.
Devices designed to reduce aerodynamic drag, including fairings meant to diminish the gap, are being researched and developed as part of the Aerodynamics Project. The project was launched more than seven years ago, and is an ongoing effort by government, research and commercial entities to advance tractor-trailer aerodynamics and increase fuel efficiency.
Much of the work, according to McCallen, consists of computer simulations of air flow around a tractor-trailer, and wind tunnel experiments using models.
