Postal Service To Raise Price Of Stamps in '06

The independent Postal Rate Commission approved a 5.4% rate hike for the U.S. Postal Service that will raise the price of a first-class stamp 2 cents to 39 cents. The PRC said the rate increase is expected to take effect in early 2006.
It will be the first postage-rate hike since June 2002, the commission said. The additional funds will allow the postal service to meet a $3.1 billion escrow payment next year, it said.
The rate for mailing a postcard will rise to 24 cents.
Also under the plan, nonprofit organizations will pay 817 million less than the postal service requested, and the commission recommended that small local newspapers "enjoy" a 2.3% decrease in rates.
