President Signs Transport Funding Measure

Transport Topics, December, 2005 by Anonymous

President Bush signed into law Nov. 30 a measure that provides $65.9 billion in funding for transportation projects during the current fiscal year, which began Oct. 1.

Amtrak is to get $1.3 billion, up slightly from $1.2 billion the previous year. The bill includes provisions for Amtrak to haul some freight along with its regular passenger runs, the New York Times reported last week.

The measure also redirects funds from two controversial Alaska bridges to the state's transportation department, which will be able to use the $442 million for other purposes, if it chooses to do so.

The new law also contains language that makes it more difficult for states to enforce federal rules for movers of household goods (11-28, p. 3). - Staff and Wire Reports
