Former DHS Official Urges Industry To Upgrade Cargo Security Programs

WASHINGTON - A former business liaison for the Department of Homeland security said the government "can only do so much" to prevent terror attacks, and the private sector needs to "participate as a partner" to upgrade security and keep commerce moving.

While Douglas Doan, who left DHS in October, praised the government's efforts to prevent weapons of mass destruction from entering the country, he faulted authorities for not doing enough to expedite the movement of low-risk shipments and provide freight haulers with a tangible return on security investments.

"There's no debate that shipments coming into the U.S. are safer than ever before," Doan said at a Cargo security Forum here Dec. 5.
