UPS Plans to Upgrade Hand-Held Computers

A technology executive at UPS Inc. said the package delivery firm plans a series of upgrades to the hand-held computers used by drivers that will make it easier to locate packages and addresses and to plan schedules.
Mark Hopkins, UPS' vice president for package process management, said the upgrades to the more than 70,000 devices in the United States should also reduce drivers' delivery times.
"These upgrades will simplify the tracking process for drivers and make it easier to develop dispatch plans," Hopkins told TRANSPORT TOPICS.
The upgraded hand-held devices, part of a $600 million initiative started in 2003, will use global positioning system technology to constantly determine whether a driver is in the right location, Hopkins said.
