Fed Says Economy, Trucking Remain Strong
Transport Topics, January, 2006 by Anonymous
The U.S. economy continued to grow at the end of 2005, with trucking and shipping still strong in much of the country despite high fuel prices and the persistent driver shortage, the Federal Reserve said Jan. 18 in its "Beige Book" report.
Based on information collected between Nov. 21 and Jan. 8, the Fed's Atlanta, Cleveland, Chicago and Philadelphia districts all said trucking companies were being constrained by a driver shortage.
And despite fuel surcharges, officials in Cleveland, Dallas, and Atlanta noted that margins tightened because of higher prices.
Heavy-truck production was characterized as improving in Chicago, while conditions in the transportation equipment sector were mixed in St. Louis. - Transport Topics
