UPS Sued by EEOC for Not Hiring Rastafarian

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission said it is suing package carrier UPS Inc. for "refusing to hire a Rastafarian" in November 2004 at its facility in secaucus, N.J., "because of his beard."
"The allegations in that complaint are totally unfounded and untrue and UPS intends to vigorously defend its position," UPS spokesman Norman Black told TRANSPORT TOPICS.
The EEOC said in a release that UPS required Ronnis Mason to shave his beard for a job as a driver helper because the position involves customer contact and assisting with deliveries.
EEOC said that when Mason told UPS he was unwilling to shave his beard, he was "told he could then only apply for an inside, lower-paying position that would not have contact with the public."
