Siemens Says Sensor Improves Engine Performance

Transportation component manufacturer Siemens VDO said it has developed a new sensor aimed at improving the environmental performance of diesel-powered vehicles by improving the combustion process.
Siemens VDO, a subsidiary of Siemens AG, said its glow plug integrated pressure sensor provides feedback to a truck's engine management system to control "the timing and quantity of fuel injected in the cylinder to stabilize temperatures."
The sensor will be commercially available in 2008, according to Siemens.
By controlling the fuel-injection process, carriers can reduce the chances of a truck producing high levels of nitrogen oxide emissions, Siemens said. The sensor is attached to the glow plug, which means truck manufacturers will not have to redesign an engine to...
