UAW Seeks Strike Votes at Delphi Plants
Transport Topics, May, 2006 by Anonymous
The United Auto Workers union asked employees at bankrupt component maker Delphi Corp. to hold strike authorization votes by May 14.
Dick Shoemaker, a UAW vice president, made the request to leaders of local offices during a meeting in Detroit, according to union spokesman Paul Krell. If workers give authorization, then union officials could call a strike if they feel it is necessary.
Delphi wants to impose pay cuts of as much as 55% and close 21 of 29 U.S. plants.
Some of the strike votes could occur before a hearing in New York set for May 9 and 10, when a bankruptcy judge will consider the firm's request to scrap its labor contracts.
