Ind. Tries Cable Barriers On Highway Medians

PORTAGE, Ind. - The Indiana Department of Transportation is experimenting with cable barriers to prevent vehicles from crossing the median on highways and causing head-on crashes.

The barriers, made of flexible steel cable, have been built on a seven-mile stretch of the Indiana Toll Road in Portage and Chesterton. The other two pilot sites are south of Lebanon along Interstate 65 and I-465, and along Interstate 69.

The barriers, which consist of four steel cables connected by vertical poles, were placed in areas known to have a high number of accidents, said Indiana Department of Transportation spokesman Thomas Cogan.
