ILLINOIS: New Traffic Service

SPRINGFIELD - Wondering whether there's a traffic jam ahead? Next year, you might he able to dial 511 and find out.

The Illinois Department of Transportation is seeking a company to create a traveler information service accessible by phone, similar to those in 24 other states.

The system, in which motorists could dial 511 to find out about traffic congestion and foul weather, would combine several toll-free numbers in operation now. One is for interstate highway conditions. Others provide updates for the Chicago and St. Louis areas and the Illinois Tollway.

It's taken two years and $150,000 in consulting fees to create the concept, but now IDOT is ready to go.

"We know what we're looking for," spokesman Matt Vanover said.
