PENNSYLVANIA: Turnpike Plazas

Transport Topics, October, 2006 by Anonymous

OAKMONT - The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission and a Maryland firm have announced a 30-year, multibillion-dollar contract to expand and modernize service plazas on the turnpike.

HMSHost Corp. will pay $100 million to renovate or rebuild 18 of the turnpike's 21 service plazas in return for a 30-year lease on the properties under the deal. The updated service plazas will have more food choices and more bathrooms, officials said.

The deal will allow state officials to devote more money to infrastructure projects such as highway maintenance and expansion, said Joe Brimmeier, the Turnpike Commission's chief executive officer.

Officials said it will take about five years to renovate 18 plazas. Three are scheduled to close.
