Drivers Get Class-Action Status in Wal-Mart Suit

Transport Topics, May, 2007 by Anonymous

A federal judge in Little Rock, Ark., has granted class-action status to over-the-road Wal-Mart truck drivers who have alleged in a lawsuit that the company used racially discriminatory hiring practices.

The lawsuit was filed in 2004 by African American truck drivers who claimed that, since 2001, they were discouraged from applying for driving jobs by the company's policies and practices.

A Wal-Mart spokesman said in a May 17 statement the company believes the lawsuit will be resolved in its favor. "We disagree with the district courts decision and are considering an appeal," said John Simley.

The May 16 class-action ruling by U.S. District Judge Bill Wilson Jr. also said the truckers, who could number as many as 10,000, can seek back pay. - Transport Topics
