MISSOURI: Visa Fraud

A southeast Missouri legislator pleaded guilty Aug. 9 to fraud charges after he illegally obtained temporary worker visas for hundreds of New Zealand immigrants who then became truck drivers for companies in Missouri and Arkansas.
State Rep. Nathan Cooper (R), an attorney specializing in immigration law, faces up to 15 years in prison and fines of up to $500,000 when he is sentenced in October.
In his law practice, Cooper represented employers seeking worker visas under a government program.
Companies such as those in the hospitality and construction industries that cannot fulfill their need for seasonal workers may apply to sponsor temporary immigrant workers.
