ILLINOIS: No Wi-Fi

Transport Topics, November, 2007 by Anonymous

SPRINGFIELD - Wireless access sponsored by the state at interstate rest stops is on hold after Illinois officials failed to woo anyone willing to provide the service.

The Illinois Department of Transportation said no vendors submitted proposals after it put out a call for bids. It's the second time in less than a year that the process fell flat.

In the first attempt, just one company submitted a proposal to offer the service at more than 50 rest stops. But that vendor was disqualified later for missing a meeting.

IDOT had hoped to have the service in place by this year.

A department spokesman said the agency hasn't given up, but he isn't sure when bids might be sought for a third time.
