FHWA Denies Pa.'s Request to Toll I-80; Seeks Data on Improvements, Financing
Transport Topics, December, 2007 by Godfrey, Sarah
The Federal Highway Administration denied Pennsylvania's application for provisional approval to toll Interstate 80 - beginning in 2010 - and asked the state to provide additional information.
The FHWA denial came the same day as a meeting between U.S. Rep. John Peterson (R-Pa.) and U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Mary Peters. Peterson's office said that in the meeting, Peters indicated that FHWA's approval of the I-80 proposal was not guaranteed.
The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission, which jointly submitted the application with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation in October, said last week it already had compiled some of the requested data, but other portions of their response to the FHWA query could take "days, weeks or, perhaps, months."
