Iowa Lawmakers Support Road Work, Disagree Over Funding

DES MOINES, Iowa - Every lawmaker supports upkeep of the state's roads and bridges, Ibut the question of how to pay for maintaining the transportation infrastructure is more vexing.
Faced with what the state Department of Transportation contends is an annual $200 million shortfall in infrastructure work, lawmakers acknowledge they're not sure what should be done. That uncertainty may be due to mixed messages from voters, who want safe roads but could punish legislators who actually call for increased taxes to pay for the work.
"You know, I just don't know," said Rep. Jim Lykam (D), vice chairman of the House Transportation Committee. "I don't quite hear about it in Scott County. But then, in other rural counties, my colleagues will say, 'Our roads are in terrible shape....
