US FDA approves Bristol-Myers' hepatitis B drug.

Mar. 31--NEW DELHI -- In a breakthrough achievement in tackling hepatitis B, Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMS) on Wednesday announced receiving the US FDA approval for its new drug -- entecavir -- for treatment of chronic hepatitis B infection in adults.

Entecavir is an oral antiviral therapy specifically designed to block the replication of hepatitis B virus (HBV) in the body by interfering with the virus's ability to infect cells. This is expected to give a new ray hope to millions of hepatitis B patients, who, over a period of time, stop responding to the current treatment option -- lamivudine.
