Dr Reddy's loses potency as Eli Lilly wins Zyprexa case.

Apr. 16--MUMBAI, India -- The Dr Reddy's Laboratories scrip crashed on Friday as the loss of a key US court case against drug giant Eli Lilly added to the troubled Hyderabad-based drug maker's problems and underscored, once again, the difficulties of operating in the extremely competitive American market.

A US district court on Thursday upheld Eli Lilly's patent for anti-psychotic drug Zyprexa, thus defeating the challenge by generic drug companies, Dr Reddy's, Ivax and Teva Pharmaceuticals, and removing the uncertainty over the US giant's $4.4bn drug.

This is Dr Reddy's third defeat in just over a year. The company lost last year to Swiss giant Novartis on Lamisil, an anti-fungal drug, and to Pfizer on anti-hypertensive Norvasc.
