Pfizer may push for settlement on Lipitor.

Jun. 10--MUMBAI/DELHI -- In '03, Ranbaxy challenged the patent of the blockbuster drug in the US market, which is called a para IV filing. If Ranbaxy wins the case, it could ensure that the company's generic product has some period of exclusivity.

Much would be at stake for Pfizer if it loses patent protection on Lipitor. It is believed that Pfizer may push for an out-of-court settlement with Ranbaxy on Lipitor. An out-of-court settlement could result in a windfall of over $1bn for Ranbaxy, according to market rumours. In addition, Pfizer is also said to be negotiating for an exclusive sourcing agreement from the Indian pharma major.
