AstraZeneca sues Ranbaxy over Nexium.
Economic Times (New Delhi, India), November, 2005
Nov. 23--DELHI -- Ranbaxy has another high profile legal battle coming up, with AstraZeneca on Tuesday saying that it was suing the Indian drug major for challenging the patent of the latter's blockbuster anti-ulcer drug, Nexium. The legal battle with AstraZeneca is set to take off even as Ranbaxy is fighting a similar patent challenge case with another MNC, Pfizer, over its cholesterol lowering drug Lipitor.
AstraZeneca had indicated last month itself that it was "evaluating" the options against Ranbaxy when the latter made the para IV ANDA filing for the generic version of Nexium. Nexium (esomeprazole) is AstraZeneca's best-selling drug and is the world's third largest-selling prescription drug, registering sales of about $3.9bn last year.
