Railways unlikely to hike freight rates.

Feb. 10--NEW DELHI -- Tried and tested successfully, the Indian Railways will not make changes to freight fares fixed in the last budget. Despite inflationary pressures, railway freight fares are unlikely to go up in the next fiscal. According to Rail Bhawan sources, some rationalisation in freight fares of different commodities is expected, but no "across the board" hike or fall.
Railway ministry insiders said the freight target will be set at 800m tonne. During the current fiscal, despite hike in diesel prices, railways extended the scheme of providing 15 percent concession in freight rates booked during the lean period from October to January '05.
