US generics lures pharma cos again.

Feb. 15--NEW DELHI -- Some good news may finally be round the corner for domestic pharma majors Ranbaxy and Dr Reddy's Laboratories, among others.

They were hit hard by price erosion in the US generic market last year, but analysts now project an upward growth prospect for them in the US on the back of a strong pipeline build-up and new launches.

According to a recent Merrill Lynch report, generic price deterioration in the US may be tempered by a strong volumes growth. The US generic industry is projected to register a reasonably strong growth with $22bn worth of branded patents due to expire in '06. This should result in volumes growth of 18.2 percent and 14.1 percent, in '06 and '07, respectively.
