Vangal seen as dark horse in race for Meakin's beer biz.

Mar. 3--BANGALORE, India -- The flamboyant serial entrepreneur, Ramesh Vangal, is emerging as a dark horse in the race for Mohan Meakin's beer business. In a surprise move, Mr Vangal along with an undisclosed Wall Street fund has placed an 'aggressive bid' for 51 percent stake in Meakin's beer operations.

Mr Vangal offered no comment, when contacted. The move brings Mr Vangal right back into the limelight after he lost the race for Shaw Wallace & Co (SWC) to UB Group Chairman Vijay Mallya. Besides firing a bid for the beer business -- which is reportedly in the reckoning along with the one placed by the front-runner SABMiller -- Mr Vangal is also exploring the possibility of an alliance with Mohan Meakin to snap up the distribution of its IMFL portfolio led by...
