Petroleum engineers strike paydirt.

Jan. 12--MUMBAI, India -- Though the price of black gold has cooled off, that of the black gold 'miners' hasn't. Oil companies flush with the success of striking gas off India's coast, have poured more than $2 billion into oil exploration and that means the petroleum engineer is finding his way to the oil rigs and fat paychecks once again. The number of students that enroll for the petroleum-engineering course is on a sharp upswing.

"The total strength of students in the 2007 batch is 60 while about five years ago it was about 25. We are planning to increase the seats to 75 by next year," says VP Sharma, continuing education and professor (training and placement), the Indian School of Mines (ISM).

Pay packages offered have also seen an upward trend....
