FTC fines on e-tailers.

Kiplinger Letter, The, March, 2000

Federal Trade Comm. will fine e-tailers who couldn't deliver on promises made to customers ordering on the Web last holiday season. Dozen or more firms will be hit for violating mail-order delivery rule. Agency wants to make examples of a few to get others to toe the line.

The FTC will also crack down on rampant office supply scams, which cost business $250 million annually. Smalls often are the victims. Most prevalent con: Telemarketers peddling toner for copiers, printers.

To protect yourself, have set policies...channel all inquiries to one person. Be wary of limited-time offers, get promises in writing.
