Congress is poised to extend several popular tax breaks.

Getting new life: Temporary hikes in the minimum tax exemptions, marriage penalty relief, child tax credit and the larger 10% tax bracket. All are set to expire at the end of the year. Congress hasn't decided how long the extensions will be, but one or two years is a good bet.

A vote is likely before the Democratic convention. Why so soon? Democrats have been insisting that lawmakers cut other budget programs to make up for revenue lost to the Treasury due to these tax breaks. Republicans, meanwhile, favor extending the tax cuts without offsets.
