Harry Reid is no Tom Daschle. Yes, the Senate Democratic leader has a temperament similar to his predecessor?s, and Reid can be just as fiercely partisan when pushed. But he?s more pragmatic.

Business will notice the difference. Reid has closer ties to business, dating to his young-lawyer days. As lieutenant governor of Nevada, he made a name attracting new businesses to the state. In the Senate, he protected the mining industry from burdensome regs.

Reid wants to prove that Democrats can be friendly to business, so he?ll pick his battles carefully. He discouraged filibusters of the class action lawsuit legislation and the bankruptcy overhaul. He'll be instrumental in passing long-stalled energy legislation and will support an asbestos litigation fix,...
