A silver lining to high energy costs:

They'll aid in a war on global warming. Evidence is mounting that the danger is real and long-term consequences potentially dire: Widespread flooding, population dislocations, disease outbreaks and food and water shortages. The key to reducing greenhouse gases (GHGs) is lower oil, coal and natural gas emissions. Remedies will be a lot easier to embrace if they will also combat high energy prices.

Still, greener living will cost.

The first move: More miles per gallon from cars and trucks. Look for Congress to hike vehicle fuel efficiency standards soon. But lawmakers won't go far enough this time. Within a few years, Congress will come back to the issue, making 50 mpg the fleet average and pairing rebates...
