Can Harry Potter carry the day for the book and film industries?
Many people think the boy wizard can do that and a lot more. They're even counting on him to boost retail sales and exports in 2007.
Book publishers expect U.S. sales to jump 6.7%, in no small part due to the July release of the seventh and last Harry Potter installment. The book is set to go on sale just as a new Harry Potter movie debuts. That's no coincidence. Book and movie sales tend to feed off each other.
Books downloaded from the Internet will grow in market share, though at $1 billion, they'll still represent under 3% of total sales.
The film industry is counting on other sequels to bring success in 2007. In addition to Harry Potter, new exploits are planned...
