Five new prescription drugs are nearing approval from the FDA.(HEALTH)

Kiplinger Letter, The, May, 2007

Five new prescription drugs are nearing approval from the FDA. All are potential blockbusters, helping drug firms replace profits lost because of expired patents on Zocor, Ambien and other popular drugs.

Awaiting the nod this year or next: A cervical cancer vaccine, Cervarix, from GlaxoSmithKline. An obesity-fighting drug, Acomplia, from Sanofi-Aventis. It blocks signals to the brain that can cause people to overeat. A treatment for major depressive disorders, Pristiq, from Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, which also wants the FDA to approve it to treat hot flashes from menopause. A clot blocker for stroke patients, Prasugrel, from Eli Lilly. And a once-daily remedy for type 2 diabetes, Galvus, from Novartis. It can be used alone or with other treatments.
