There's increasing talk that Ben Bernanke will be a one-termer. The Federal Reserve chairman's job performance is under fire from both Wall Street and Main Street, and none of the candidates for the White House feels any compulsion to keep him in charge. Critics claim that the Fed under Bernanke's leadership was too slow to recognize and take steps to address the weakening economy.
Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama would likely make a change, tapping someone who would be sympathetic to their economic policies.
John McCain would also probably lean toward a fresh face, though he would feel less pressure than Democrats to switch horses.
But much will depend on economic conditions in late 2009, a few months or so before Bernanke's four-year term...
