PROJECT OVERVIEW

The local KOWLOON-CANTON RAILWAY CORP. (KCRC) recently awarded a railway extension contract to a Japanese/British joint venture. The partners in the planned undertaking and their respective shareholdings include Japan-based PENTA-OCEAN CONSTRUCTION CO. (85%) and KIER GROUP PLC of the UK (15%).

According to the terms of the award, the partnership will be responsible for building a 30.5 km-long track. The planned segment is intended to enable linking the New Territories with Urban Kowloon. The cost to complete the infrastructure works has been pegged at $228,000,000.

Project completion is scheduled for October 2003.
