The banking industry of the Dutch government performed well in 1993 despite the pessimistic expectations of analysts due to the economic downturn in domestic and international markets. Lending activities have been low. A boom in the stock exchange and the sudden improvement in the mortgage sector with rapidly decreasing interest rates have written off skepticism on the Dutch economy. The banking industry will be introducing new savings products. A new market for employee savings is being opened in consonance with the Dutch government's campaign for individual savings and pension schemes.

The Dutch economy may be in the doldrums but banks have confounded sceptics by posting good results. Tino Bakker reports
