The privatization industry was born in 1984 with British Telecom as the first entity privatized. In its second decade, the industry has become a mature one as deals fall into two categories. Either they are complex and politically difficult deals or pioneering arrangements done in the Third World. Privatization has become the measuring stick of governments' progress and political will in ensuring free market reforms in their respective countries. One development that has emerged in the industry is fee-cutting which has been attributed to the increasing maturity of the business.
