Several issues were discussed during the IMF/World Bank's Sep 1997 meetings in Hong Kong. These include arguments between Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad and investor George Soros over the cause of Malaysia's economic problems, agreement over the planned $285 billion increase in the IMF's capital base and the IMF Interim Committee's proposal that the IMF increase its role in the liberalization of capital flows.
